Brussels_Belgium_Crime Lab Fire Aug 2016After initial, sensationalized reports about a bombing, it turned out that the Institute, located in Neder-Over-Heembeek in Brussels was targeted by a group of arsonists. Two persons have been detained for questioning.

Police only states that a delivery van drove up to the side of the building at around 2:00 a.m. local time. The attackers are thought to have climbed onto the van, using it as a ladder to gain access to the building.

An accelerant, purportedly fuel from a Jerry can, was then poured into the building before the building was set alight. The van was also burned in the process.

It is at this time unclear whether the burning of the van was planned to destroy evidence like DNA, or if it was accidentally set ablaze.

Any professional firefighter or civil defense volunteer will be able to certify that setting a fire using a volatile accelerant like fuel, more often than not, results in injuring the arsonist.

Any qualified “special effects expert” would also be able to testify to that fact that simply pouring an accelerant into a building and to set it alight with a match looks as good in movies as it is inherently stupid and dangerous. It takes an expert to make these effects look somewhat credible, or rather incredible.

Firefighters drove to the institute and put out the flames. There is considerable damage from the blaze, but reportedly, nobody was hurt. It is at this time unknown whether that would include any of the arsonists. The group fled the scene but two persons have been detained for questioning.

The office of Brussels’ public prosecutor has thus far refrained from making any statements about the possible motives. Ine Van Wymersch at the prosecutor’s office states  that the incident is under investigation.

She confirms that the institute contains significant amounts of important information, including evidence such as DNA. Wymersch stated that it would be premature to link the incident to terrorism but also this possibility is being actively investigated. Besides holding evidence from criminal cases throughout Belgium, the institute also holds Belgium’s national DNA databank.
