Officials said the government was authorized to supervise activities of the tens of thousands of mosques and prayer meetings. They said the Islamic Affairs Ministry would screen clergy and sermons for Friday prayers.

“There will be a unified effort to oversee preachers and their sermons,” Islamic Affairs Minister Mohammed Gomaa said.

In remarks to Egypt’s official Middle East News Agency on March 11, Gomaa said his ministry drafted a timetable to impose control over mosques and preachers. He said the ministry would reorganize the administration and personnel of mosques.

“Each preacher will be responsible for his mosque,” Gomaa said.

Officials said the Islamic Affairs Ministry was also authorized to
regulate funds to mosques and other religious institutions. They said the
ministry would not allow any organization to raise funds through mosques.

“Nobody will be allowed to contribute to any organization or person that
can not provide an official receipt,” Gomaa said.
