Emergency Senate Update

Emergency Senate Update

The Senate adjourned without voting in any amendments to S. 2155 or even deciding which ones should be voted on. So while Senate sources have told us it is likely that we will have a vote on Audit the Fed next week, we are still not 100% certain that there will be a vote. Campaign for Liberty members should still call Mitch McConnell to ask he allow the Senate to vote on Senator Rand Pauls Audit the Fed amendment to S. 2155.

Senator McConnells D.C. office is not taking calls and their voice mail is full. Call one of his district offices and tell them to pass the message along: allow a vote on Senator Pauls Audit the Fed amendment.

Paducah (Western Kentucky Office) Phone: (270) 442-4554 Louisville (Louisville Metro Area Office) Phone: (502) 582-6304 London (Eastern Kentucky Office) Phone: (606) 864-2026 Bowling Green (South Central Kentucky Office) Phone: (270) 781-1673 Fort Wright (Northern Kentucky Office) Phone: (859) 578-0188 Lexington (Bluegrass Area Office) Phone: (859) 224-8286

After they finish voting on S. 2155, the Senate will consider H.R. 1865. As I have written before, this legislation makes internet providers like Facebook, Google, and Twitter liable for criminal acts done by those using their platform. The bill requires they know about the conduct, however it leaves open the possibility that websites will be liable if they where monitoring for bad conduct but failed to catch all the bad actors.

This bill is well-intentioned but exceeds Congresss constitutional limitations, sets a dangerous precedent for government holding websites liable for conduct they could not reasonably be expected to control, and provides a disincentive for web sites to take steps to prevent their platforms from being misused.
