‘Foreign firms evade Afghan taxes’

Companies that dodge taxes use diplomatic channels and rely on NATO to pressure the Afghan government into not prosecuting them, according to the report released on Sunday.

The foreign companies doing business in several fields including security, logistics, communication and media owe the Afghan government more than 70 million dollars in tax revenues, the report stated.

Waheedullah Tawhidi, a senior official at the Afghan Finance Ministry, said, “They (NATO-linked foreign firms) face legal punishments and their licenses to conduct operation in Afghanistan will be canceled if they continue to evade tax.”

The United States and its allies invaded Afghanistan in 2001 under the pretext of combating terrorism.

On December 22, Afghan President Hamid Karzai blamed foreigners for widespread corruption in Afghanistan and said the announced withdrawal of US-led foreign forces in 2014 will help the country overcome fraud.

“The big corruption is in transactions and contracts involving outsiders in Afghanistan… These contracts are given to senior government officials or their relatives,” Karzai said in a Saturday speech marking the International Anti-Corruption Day in Kabul.

“The corruption in our administration is small. The major corruption that involves hundreds of millions of dollars is not ours… It has been imposed on us.”

A recent international survey of public sector corruption released by Transparency International listed Afghanistan as one of the three countries with the worst record of corruption.
