Italy premier wins confidence vote

Italy’s new prime minister, Matteo Renzi, has won his first confidence vote in the upper house of parliament.

The Senate supported the confidence motion needed to confirm the administration of Renzi by 169 votes in favor to 139 against on Tuesday.

In his opening speech to the parliament, Renzi pledged to implement changes and reforms. He also promised to cut taxes, free up funds for investment in schools, and pass wide institutional reforms.

He told political leaders in the parliament that they need to take “radical, decisive choices” in a bid to turn Italy into a “place of opportunities”.

“We only have one chance. This is it,” said the center-left Democratic Party leader, whose governing experience until now had been limited to local politics, mainly as mayor of Florence.

“I am looking you in the eyes and saying: if we lose, we will not seek excuses. If we lost this challenge, the fault will be mine alone,” he added.

Renzi must now win a confidence vote in the lower house, or the Chamber of Deputies, where his party has a strong majority.

The second vote is expected later on Tuesday.

Italy, the third largest eurozone economy, has been suffering from deep recession for more than two years, with its unemployment rate as high as 12.7 percent in December.
