Native Americans suffer discrimination

“The sense of loss, alienation and indignity is pervasive throughout the Indian country,” James Anaya, the UN Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, said in a statement on Friday.

“It is evident that there have still not been adequate measures of reconciliation to overcome the persistent legacies of the history of oppression and that there is still much healing that needs to be done,” he added.

Anaya also said systemic and individual racial discrimination are rampant against Native Americans.

He warned that historical wrongs, particularly the loss of land, continue to have an overriding impact on the wellbeing of the indigenous people.

The UN official made the comments after he finished a 12-day research mission probing the current status and experience of the Native American population.

He met with tribes in Arizona, Alaska, Oregon, Washington, South Dakota and Oklahoma. The leader of 30 tribes expressed their problems in a meeting with Anaya.

“Over the past 12 days, I have heard stories that make evident the profound hurt that indigenous peoples continue to feel because of the history of oppression they have faced,” he said.

In 2010, the US backed the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), which was passed in 2007. Washington’s support, however, did not help improve the situation of the indigenous people.

One of the tribal leaders told the UN official on Friday that the US Congress has great power in limiting Native American communities.

Meanwhile, US Department of Justice statistics said one out of three Native women will be raped in her lifetime and three out of five will be physically assaulted, while their offenders escape prosecution under the color of discriminatory United States law.

Anaya is set to draft a report about the issue to the UN Human Rights Council in September.
