Pakistan passenger plane attacked

Unidentified gunmen have opened fire on a Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) aircraft as it was landing in the volatile city of Peshawar, officials say.

According to policeman Asghar Khan, flight PK 756 was carrying nearly 180 passengers traveling from Saudi Arabia when it came under attack on Tuesday night as it was preparing to touch down at Peshawar’s Bacha Khan International Airport.

Police said six bullets hit the plane, killing one Pakistani woman, and injuring two stewards.

“When I went inside the plane, I saw the woman lying on the seat and her nine-year-old daughter was crying, ‘My mother is dead, my mother is dead’,” PIA official Mohammad Kifayatullah Khan said.

“All the passengers were panicked. Some of them wanted to get out as soon as possible because they were afraid of fire inside the plane,” he added.

No group or individual has so far claimed responsibility for the attack, which came after gunmen laid siege to Pakistan’s busiest airport in the city of Karachi.

On June 8, more than 30 people were killed in a five-hour gun battle at Jinnah International Airport. Pro-Taliban militants later claimed responsibility for the deadly incident.

Two days later, militants carried out another attack on a training center outside the airport in Karachi. However, Pakistani security forces rushed to the scene and managed to promptly repulse the assault.

Pro-Taliban militants have carried out numerous attacks against security forces as well as civilians, and managed to spread their influence in various regions of the country, despite sporadic offensives by the Pakistani army.

Thousands of Pakistanis have lost their lives in bombings and other militant attacks since 2001, when Pakistan entered an alliance with the United States in the so-called war on terror.
