Spanish police seize 4 tons of cocaine

On Wednesday, police said they raided over a dozen properties belonging to three Spanish nationals and confiscated the cocaine valued at 242 million euros that the gang stored in a warehouse in Spain’s eastern city Elche.

The group used cowhides as containers to hide and conceal the smell of the cocaine; the police told reporters, calling the bust one of the biggest seizures of the drug in Spain.

According to police, the gang intended to smuggle the drug to dealers for its sale and use around Europe.

During the investigation, police searched 16 houses, businesses and warehouses that belonged to those arrested and confiscated guns, ammo and six luxurious vehicles as well as 6,755 euros in cash.

The three unnamed Spanish traffickers collaborated with merchants in Colombia who helped to move the cocaine shipment across the Atlantic to Spain by boat.

Spain acts as a drug trade hub to Europe due to its short distance from Morocco and strong ties to former colonies in South and Central America.

Major seizures of the illicit drug usually happen at sea during the transit from Latin American countries to Spain.

In 2006, police caught drug traffickers carrying three tons of the cocaine on a ship near the Canary Islands in the Atlantic Ocean.
