‘FIFA 14’ announced for PS3, Xbox 360 and PC, first screens released (Photos)

EA Sports made the next edition of its soccer franchise official Wednesday as it announced FIFA 14 for the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC. That’s right. There’s no mention of the title for the PS4 or next Xbox (aka Xbox 720) yet nor for the Wii U but EA Sports promises announcements for additional platforms will come in the months ahead.

FIFA 14 will be released this fall and introduce new features that tweak the successful formula of the franchise in the hopes of making the gameplay better. One of those new features is a ball physics system called Pure Shot. This system will allow players to “adjust their stride and approach angle to find the best position for hitting the back of the net” according to the EA Sports press release. This is combined with a new Real Ball Physics system that will allow a larger variety of shot types and more realistic flight when the ball is in the air.

Another gameplay tweak is Sprint Dribble Turns which will allow players to turn in any direction while dribbling full speed with the ball. The momentum of the player is maintained so the dribbler’s stats will come into play to determine how sharp he can turn while holding on to control of the ball.

Teammate AI on the field has been improved as well for both attacking and defending. Teammates now have new ways to get away from defenders and get open. Meanwhile on defense, the AI tracks players through multiple frames to better recognize opportunities to mark a man for defense.

The Career Mode has been cleaned up some as well with a new hub screen that provides all information at a glance. Additionally, there’s the new Global Scouting Network that revamps the game’s recruiting methods by sending scouts out to find footballers with the desired traits and skills. These scouts will return with reports on players that have ranges of scores for different attributes. More scouting of that particular player will be needed to narrow down the range to determine if that is a player to sign.

EA Sports also plans on changes for the FIFA Ultimate Team feature and the EA Sports Football Club. It also promises a new online mode that will “encourage social competition” but details on that have yet to be revealed.
