Three arrested in Manchester investigation: Suicide bomber identified as Salman Abedi

nsnbc: Police detained three suspects in the suicide bombing that killed 22 and wounded another 59 in Manchester. Police identified the alleged suicide bomber as Salman Abedi. It is at this time uncertain whether or not he had links to ISIS or the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group. Likewise, police have, despite sensationalized media reports and statements, not yet established a motive.

Salman Abedi_UK_Manchester_May 2017A spokeswoman for Greater Manchester Police said “Three police warrants were executed in south Manchester in connection to the ongoing investigation.” Police is working on the hypothesis that the suicide bomber probably was not working alone and had accomplices.

Police also named the 22-year-old British-born Salman Abedi as the suicide bomber who killed himself and 22 others at the Manchester Arena indoor venue Monday night at the end of a concert by U.S. pop singer Ariana Grande. The concert was attended by thousands of teenagers. The youngest of those who were killed was an 8-year-old girl.

Interior Minister Amber Rudd told reporters that “It seems likely, possible, that he (Abedi) wasn’t doing this on his own”. Rudd also said Abedi had been known to security services before the bombing. Rudd was taken aback by the fact that possibly compromising details about Abdi had been released in the United States. Asked if she was surprised, Rudd said:

“Yes, quite frankly. I mean the British police have been very clear that they want to control the flow of information in order to protect operational integrity, the element of surprise, so it is irritating if it gets released from other sources and I have been very clear with our friends that should not happen again.”

Asked if the release of the information had compromised the investigation she said “I wouldn’t go that far but I can say that they are perfectly clear about the situation and that it shouldn’t happen again.”

U.S. security sources, citing British intelligence officials, said Abedi was born in Manchester in 1994 to parents of Libyan origin. Rudd told reporters she believed Abedi had recently returned from Libya. Meanwhile, French Interior Minister Gerard Collomb said British investigators had told French authorities Abedi had probably travelled to Syria as well.

The Manchester attack was the deadliest in Britain since July 2005, when 52 people were killed in coordinated attacks on London’s transport network. The 2005 bombings stirred a great deal of controversy, especially because exercises, simulating identical attacks in identical locations were in progress at the attacks occurred.

The self-proclaimed Islamic State (ISIS, ISIL, Daesh) reportedly claimed responsibility for the attack. However, this claim cannot currently be independently verified. Moreover, so-called “official” ISIS publications like Dabiq have repeatedly shown poor journalism when they based their reports about ISIS’s claims of responsibility for attacks on unsubstantiated, unverifiable tweets, statements, and conjecture.

While it is possible that the 22-year-old Abedi had links to or was motivated by ISIS, it is also likely that he has had contacts to and been radicalized within circles in Manchester that have ties to the Libyan Al-Qaeda affiliate Libyan Islamic Fighting Group (LIFG).

It is worth noting that the Libyan Islamic Fighting group (LIFG) has long-standing ties with British and U.S. intelligence and that the so-called Islamic State also was backed by British and US intelligence until it was declared “he useful enemy” that justified military adventures in Syria.

It is currently not possible for nsnbc to independently establish whether or not Salman Abedi had links to ISIS or the LIFG and whether his – allegedly willing – participation in the suicide bombing was linked to or motivated by ISIS or the LIFG.

British Interior Minister Amber Rudd would probably be the person to go to for more, more detailed, and verifiable information also from Britain’s intelligence services. But then again, one might want to recall what Interior Minister Amber Rudd said about the release of information about Abedi and whether she was surprised:

“Yes, quite frankly. I mean the British police have been very clear that they want to control the flow of information in order to protect operational integrity, the element of surprise, so it is irritating if it gets released from other sources and I have been very clear with our friends that should not happen again.”

Only one week before parliamentary elections in the UK, the “terrorism threat level” has been raised to maximum alert. Rudd said up to 3,800 soldiers would be deployed on Britain’s streets, freeing up police officers to carry out patrols and investigatory work.
