UN blacklists North Korean state-owned firms

The Security Council imposed sanctions against North Korea after it carried
out nuclear tests in 2006 and 2009 and there are concerns that Pyongyang is
preparing to carry out a third test in the coming days.

Intelligence reports from South Korea have indicated that preparations at the
North’s Punggye-ri nuclear test site have been completed, while a government
source told the Yonhap news agency that it estimates that North Korea has
sufficient stockpiles of highly enriched, weapons-grade uranium for as many
as six bombs.

Japan and South Korea on Wednesday used a meeting of members of the nuclear
Non-Proliferation Treaty in Vienna to call on Pyongyang to refrain from any
further “provocations” that could endanger international security.

It is not clear the impact the sanctions will have on the North Korean
government’s efforts to develop nuclear weapons as, in the past, companies
have simply changed their names and continued to trade.
