Kentucky State Representative Mary Lou Marzian has proposed a law that would require a man to get approval from his wife before he could purchase Viagra or other drugs designed to temporarily overcome erectile dysfunctionality (ED).  Specifically, the law calls for the ED sufferer to have two sessions with his doctor and a properly dated and signed document giving spousal consent and stating that he would limit the use of the prescribed drug to sexual relationships with his spouse.  Moreover, only married men would be able to buy ED drugs.

Representative Marzian was motivated to introduce this far-fetched bill in response to a bill recently signed into law by the Kentucky Governor Matt Bevin that complicates the procedure a woman must go through when seeking to terminate an unwanted pregnancy.  The American Civil Liberties Union has described the new law as “an alarming overreach by lawmakers [that would] force both doctors and patients to comply with the will of lawmakers rather than medical expertise or personal choices for care.”  Governor Bevin, expressing the sentiments of pro-life advocates, stated that “many have fought a long, long time” for meaningful pro-life legislation to be crafted and signed into law.

Marzian is aware that her proposal has no real chance of passing, and that it is unlikely to even get a hearing.  The Representative has expressed that her action is intended to give the women of Kentucky a wake-up call.  She is quoted by The New York Times as saying: “I thought that if we are going to insert ourselves into women’s most private health care decisions, then we should insert ourselves into men’s most private health care decisions, as well.”
