Zambia bus crash claims 53 lives: Police

According to a statement issued by police spokeswoman Elizabeth Kanjela, the crash took place on Thursday after the bus carrying over 70 passengers en route to the capital Lusaka smashed into the truck near the town of Chifamba, about 100 kilometers (60 miles) north of the capital.

“I can confirm that 53 people have died in the accident,” said Harry Kalaba, an official in the vice president’s office, minutes after the crash.

Those injured were reportedly rushed to nearby hospitals for medical treatment.

Following the incident, Zambian President Michael Sata issued a statement to convey his “deepest condolences to the bereaved families.”


There are about 1,200 deaths in road accidents annually in Zambia, according to official data.
