‎’Sanctions on Iran backfired on West’‎

“I reckon they are probably quite close to winning based on the numbers. That was what everybody in the industry always thought would be the likely result,” said Ian Taylor, Vitol’s chief executive, on Tuesday.

The company further explained that the rise in crude oil prices to above USD 120 per barrel had more than compensated Iran for the revenues lost due to lower crude oil exports.

Press TV has conducted an Interview with Wayne Slater, with the Dallas Morning News, from Phoenix, Arizona, to discuss the situation further.

What follows is an approximate transcription of the interview.

Press TV: Mr. Slater, many are asking that what is the real reason behind these sanctions?

Slater: Well, originally the United States and members in Europe wanted to pressure Iran not to build a nuclear weapon, not to nuclearize, weaponize its domestic nuclear force.

The question though now is that if in fact this idea of a sanction has backfired, if in fact not only has it not driven down revenues, but increased revenues for Iran, the real penalty are companies and consumers in Europe and frankly it could be people in the United States, if oil goes to four dollars a gallon.

So the goal I think is to step up the tensions against Iran, to discourage Iran from building a nuclear capability.

But frankly it does not seem to be working very well if that was the goal.

Press TV: And so, why can’t Iran have a peaceful nuclear program, in light of the fact that there are regimes that possess nuclear weapons, and are not even signatories to the NPT, like Israel?

Slater: I think there are several reasons from a Western point of view.

One is that politically, here in the United States, the current president is fighting against Republicans who would like to take his job.

And so the issue of a weaponization of Iran getting a nuclear weapon and developing a nuclear program is very controversial, politically.

So everyone, politically, in the presidential race, wants to look tough on this issue and that discourages a more reasonable approach to allowing Iran to move forward.

The other thing of course is, singularly, there is a concern in the United States and others can dismiss this concern but the concern is very real.

That the protection of Israel requires at least in some cases action by the United States, including discouraging a nuclear weapon in Iran.

The US citizens have been told this by our government; it is a drum beat that we have heard for years and many American citizens and people in Europe believe that is important.

It is important that Iran not get a nuclear weapon because it directly jeopardizes the security of Israel.

It is a very real political problem here in the United States.
