18 Shia Muslims slain in Pakistan

The attackers, riding on three motorcycles, opened fire on the bus in the Kech district of the city of Turbat on Friday. The reports did not state the exact number of people injured.

Pakistani Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf’s office issued a statement condemning the attack, saying, “The cowardly act will not weaken the resolve of the government and people to defeat the forces of evil.”

No group has claimed responsibility for the terrorist action so far.

Pakistani Shia leaders have asked the government to establish a judicial committee to investigate the crime.

Militants have killed a large number of Shia Muslims in various parts of Pakistan over the past three years. Local sources say more than 2,000 Shia Muslims have been killed in the Kurram tribal region alone since 2007.

Many human rights groups and regional countries, including Iran, have condemned the recent surge in attacks against Pakistani Shia civilians and have expressed deep concern over the incidents.
