3 foreign mercs killed in Afghanistan

The three contractors, also known as foreign mercenaries, were shot dead on Sunday by a man who was wearing Afghan security force uniform, the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said in a statement, AFP reported.

One foreign soldier has also suffered injuries in the incident and the shooter is said to be killed on the spot.

The ISAF statement did not provide further details of the incident, but an Afghan official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said he knew two US nationals had been killed in the attack.

He added that the Americans had been shot by an Afghan in a police uniform at a military training center near the Herat airport in southwestern Afghanistan.

The number of the green-on-blue attacks, in which Afghan forces turn their weapons against foreign forces occupying their country, has increased in 2012.

At least 29 US-led soldiers and foreign mercenaries have been killed in 19 such attacks so far this year.

In August 2010, Afghan President Hamid Karzai ordered all private security firms to end their operations, saying they undermine government security forces.

However, in December 2010, Kabul scrapped its plan to ban private security firms due to Western diplomatic and military concerns over the decision.

All 52 remaining licensed companies would continue to provide security to US-led troops, the Pentagon, the UN mission, aid groups, embassies, and Western media companies in Afghanistan, the government said.

But the Karzai government announced tight rules on the firms’ operations due to accusations that the private security guards have killed civilians, planted bombs, and acted as bandits on the country’s roads.

Most people in Afghanistan regard the private security firms as mercenary organizations.

Xe, the private security company formerly known as Blackwater Worldwide, is the most notorious private security firm that has operated in Afghanistan.

Xe Services faces a number of legal troubles, including the indictment of five former executives on weapons and obstruction charges.

Two former Blackwater/Xe guards have also been charged with murdering two Afghan civilians.

Blackwater/Xe mercs were hated by the Iraqis during their time in Iraq because they were allowed to kill many civilians with impunity.
