nsnbc : A suicide attack rocked the center of the Afghan capital Kabul on Wednesday morning during rush hour. Kabul explosion_Afghanistan_Maj 2017Eyewitnesses in the Macroryan area reported that the attack targeted a number of military vehicles, apparently belonging to foreign forces, as the convoy was crossing the area.

Earlier reports released by the Ministry of Public Health mentioned that at least three people were killed and around 25 others were wounded. The exact number of casualties may be closer to the numbers released by the Ministry of Interior.

No person, group or organization has claimed responsibility for the attack so far. Several local media noted that the attack came only days after the Taliban announced their spring offensive and vowed to carry out more attacks on government and security institutions, officials, and personnel across the country. That said, correlation does not necessarily imply causation.

The convoy of armored vehicles and personnel carriers was used by the NATO-led Resolute Support mission.

The vehicles involved are typically designed to withstand large blasts. There was no immediate comment from the Resolute Support mission in the capital.

The heavily armored MRAP (Mine Resistant Ambush Protected) vehicles that coalition forces use to travel in Kabul appeared to have suffered only relatively minor external damage, witnesses said.

The bombing did, however, destroy or badly damage a number of civilian vehicles nearby. Witnesses said traces of blood and clothing could be seen on the ground at the blast site.
