But the meeting in Istanbul on Sunday is highly unlikely to propose military
intervention in Syria or any step that would cause Mr Assad’s downfall in
the short term.
Hillary Clinton, the US secretary of state, meanwhile warned that the Assad
regime was adding to a “long list of broken promises” by launching
new assaults on Syrian cities and towns.
“Nearly a week has gone by, and we have to conclude that the regime is
adding to its long list of broken promises,” mrs Clinton said,
according to prepared remarks distributed by the US State Department.
