AN Adelaide couple have been given suspended jail sentences for forcing their seven children to live in atrocious conditions.

The pair were found guilty on seven counts of failing to provide necessary accommodation for the children who were aged between 22 months and 13 years at the time of the offending in 2009, reports Adelaide Now.

The mother, 34, and father, 33, stood trial last year after allowing their children to live among piles of rubbish, dirty clothes, food scraps and soiled mattresses.

Passing sentence in the Adelaide Magistrates Court today, magistrate Paul Foley said the “general state of the home was atrocious” with a strong smell of urine.

The kitchen, bathroom and toilet were all unhygienic, there was a gaping hole in the ceiling in the lounge room, and there was a “putrid” smell in the bedroom used by the children.

“The amount of furniture and rubbish on the floor made movement in and around the home difficult,” Mr Foley said.

The magistrate said the father of the children was an “alcoholic looking only for his next drink”, suffered from depression, and had abdicated all responsibility in caring for the children.

The father earlier admitted he drank up to four bottles of scotch a day.

He said the mother had made more of an effort, but had felt overwhelmed.

Mr Foley jailed the man for five months and the woman for three months but suspended both terms, placing them on a 12-month good behaviour bond.

The children have been removed from the home, with the mother granted some supervised access and the father having no access since his arrest.
