AI urges release of Iran workers in Libya

The Libyan Red Crescent said in a statement on Tuesday that unidentified gunmen kidnapped a seven-member IRCS delegation after they left the headquarters of the LRC in Benghazi.

“The seven Iranian Red Crescent members must be allowed to go free. In the meantime, the armed militiamen holding them must immediately grant them contact with the outside world and ensure their safety,” said Hassiba Hadj Sahraoui, the deputy director of the Middle East and North Africa Program at Amnesty International.

“It is deeply worrying that the seven Iranians invited to Libya to discuss cooperation in the humanitarian field have been wrongfully abducted and held,” added the official.

Meanwhile, Head of the IRCS Abolhassan Faqih met with Head of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Peter Ritter on Wednesday, during which he called on the ICRC to dispatch a delegation to Libya to pursue the issue.

The Iranian delegation went to Libya at the invitation of the Libyan Red Crescent to discuss various prospects for cooperation in the field of humanitarian assistance.
