Amano to visit Iran for talks: IAEA

Amano will “discuss issues of mutual interest with high Iranian officials,” the IAEA said in a Friday statement.

In the course of his one-day working visit on Monday, May 21, the IAEA chief will meet the Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Saeed Jalili and other senior representatives of the Iranian government, the statement added.

During his visit, Amano will be joined by IAEA Deputy Director General for Safeguards Herman Nackaerts and the agency’s Assistant Director General for Policy Rafael Mariano Grossi.

Iran and the IAEA held two-day negotiations in Vienna, Austria, on Monday, three months after the last round of talks in the Iranian capital of Tehran.

Amano’s visit also comes ahead of the May 23 talks between Iran and the P5+1 (Britain, China, France, Russia, and the United States plus Germany) in Baghdad.

The latest round of talks between Iran and the P5+1 group was held in the Turkish city of Istanbul on April 14. Both sides hailed the discussions as constructive.

The US, Israel and some of their allies accuse Tehran of pursuing military objectives in its nuclear energy program.

Iran has repeatedly dismissed the Western allegations over its nuclear activities, arguing that as a committed signatory to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and an IAEA member, it has the right to use nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.
