American teacher resigns after assigning maths problems about slavery

The questions were part of a maths assignment with a historical twist – the
‘Frederick’ referred to was Frederick Douglas, a 19th century slave who
escaped to freedom and became a leader of the abolitionist movement.

The Gwinnett County school district promised an immediate investigation after
parents reacted with horror to their children’s assignment.

“Something like that shouldn’t be embedded into a kid of the third, fourth,
fifth, any grade,” said one father. “I’m having to explain to my 8-year-old
why slavery or slaves or beatings are in a math problem. That hurts.”

On Wednesday it emerged that one unnamed teacher had resigned but three others
were remaining in post after the investigation concluded.

Ron Butchart, the department head for the University of Georgia’s College of
Education, told WSB-TV that it sounded like the teacher had made “an honest
effort to integrate math and social studies.”

But God, have some sensitivity…I’m absolutely dumbfounded,” he added.
