pew.government.americans.mistrust_occupycorporatismPew Research Center conducted a study of American’s mistrust of their government and explain why this phenomenon has become more of a caricature than a credo.

Essentially, Americans do not trust their government and yet they want the government to do things for them. This very strange dichotomy is confusing because on the one hand the public is pessimistic about the direction of the country.

They like what government does, but hate government simultaneously.

In fact, 19% of those polled said they trust the federal government “always or most of the time”. And yet, 94% said they want government to maintain “a major role” in keeping them safe against terrorism.

Three-fourths of those polled, whether Democrat or Republican said government should:

• Play a major role in making the economy stronger
• Protect the environment
• Maintain national infrastructure
• Help the poor and senior citizens

Polarization of the political parties does not factor into this when the generalized negativity of those polled shows that there is a consensus on the idea that “government is doing too many things that should be left to businesses and individuals.”

Going back to 2010, Pew Research discovered that unemployment, a polarized Congress and the most recent recession drove distrust of government up to 80% of those polled.

This sentiment is part and parcel for members of the Republican Party. In a poll conducted 5 years ago, only 2% of the party members said the trust the government “always” or “most of the time”.

Moreover, 50% of Republicans asked at the time said “they never trusted the government to do what is right.”

That is understandable when Republicans feel trepidatious toward government when there is a Democrat in the White House. The percentages of Republicans trusting and disavowing the government alter as the political party in control fluctuates.

Traditionally, Republicans ignore that 9/11 happened on George W. Bush’s watch and push for more terrorism consolidation, just not if it’s Democrats at the helm.
