Android apps for a happy and fun Fourth of July

This Independence Day, grab your Android smartphone or tablet and celebrate America. Whether you’re into history, just watching out for fireworks or holding a party with friends, here are some helpful Android apps to ensure you have a fun and friendly Fourth of July.

US History Quiz (Free)

It’s always important to remember the historical background of the Fourth of July holiday, so why not test your knowledge with this handy app. This trivia quiz will see how much you really know about the United States of America’s rich history, its people and its culture. Answer questions about every U.S. president from Washington to Obama, and historical people and events from Christopher Columbus to the American Civil War to the September 11th terrorist attacks.

Fireworks Live Wallpaper (Free)

You might be able to see fireworks out of your window, or perhaps you will venture out and view a display nearby. While you’re waiting, enjoy some on your smartphone. While there are plenty of apps that perform similar functions, Fireworks Live Wallpaper must be one of the most popular. The concept here is simple: set the app as your live wallpaper and simply touch the screen and watch colorful fireworks explode by your finger. Additional settings let you change things like size, density, type and background.

Weber’s on the Grill ($4.99)

Are you hosting a party on the Fourth of July for friends and family? Maybe you’re going to wheel out the grill despite the heat? If that’s the case, check out the Weber’s on the Grill app for Android. Despite the high price of admission, this app offers a whole lot and is well worth it for barbecue enthusiasts. There are over 300 recipes (for food, rubs, marinades and sauces) plus the ability to store ingredients you need so you can create an itemized shopping list. Top this off with grilling tips, a cooking timer and instructional videos and you truly get your $5 worth.

This American Life (Free)

This popular Chicago Public Media (NPR) show hosted by Ira Glass is perfect for people looking for stories about American culture and life that run the gamut of emotions from inspiring, to moving, to funny, to flat-out peculiar. The TAL app features on-demand access to the entire 400+ episode archive, plus a link to the weekly live stream. If you’re just kicking back and relaxing this Fourth of July, why not listen to the show’s intriguing mix of themed episodes from the Peabody Award-winning show.
