Anti-fascists to oppose EDL Luton rally

Members of anti-racist groups including Unite Against Fascism (UAF) will attend the “We Are Luton” national strike organized by a coalition of trade unionists and community groups in Luton, as the EDL members planned to march in the city to provoke racism and division in the community.

“The English Defence League (EDL) has announced its intention to come to Luton on May 5th. When the EDL came here last year the lives of ordinary citizens were severely disrupted. We do not want this to happen again,” the organizing group said in a statement.

The far-right EDL group has been dedicated to promote hatred and intolerance in society, the statement also said. The group was formed to “create divisions in society by using diversity as a cause for hatred rather than celebration.”

The anti-racist group called on all decent people to attend the peaceful “We Are Luton” protest, in order to show that “there is no place for the EDL in Luton’s multiracial, multicultural and multi-faith community.”

Last year about 3,000 EDL fans attended the rally, which according to Dave Barnes from Luton UAF was “facilitated” by local Bedfordshire Police, as the force handed over main town square to the fascists.
