Argentina renews claim on Malvinas

During a UN speech on Thursday, the 30th anniversary of the end of the UK and Argentina war over the disputed archipelago, Kirchner challenged the British government which has consistently rejected to enter into further negotiations over the Malvinas (Falklands).

“We are not asking anyone to say yes, the Malvinas belong to Argentina,” she said. “We are asking no more, no less than to sit down and talk.”

Tensions between the two countries have heightened in recent months, particularly after the UK oil companies have begun to explore massive oil deposits surrounding the islands.

Kirchner told the committee the fact that Britain is ruling the islands is “an affront to the world which we all dream of.”

“How can it be part of British territory when it’s 14,000 miles away?” she asked.

Kirchner also reiterated Buenos Aires’ allegations that the UK government has militarized the southwest Atlantic, by sending its most sophisticated warship to the islands along with the country’s top officials.

A referendum has been set for next year, when the approximately 3,000 islanders will vote on which country should rule the islands. However, observers say that since about 70 percent of the residents are now British descendants, the potential outcome of any referendum will be quite clear.
