Assistance available for Qld flood victims

Residents affected by flooding in and around the inland Queensland town of Roma will now be able to access assistance to help their recovery, the state government says.

Natural disaster relief and recovery arrangements have been activated with a community recovery centre established at the Roma Cultural Centre to begin operating from Sunday, Community Services Minister Karen Struthers said.

Residents will be able to get help from the Red Cross, Lifeline and Queensland Health and can register for home visits and follow-up support, Ms Struthers said.

In Roma, all 13,000 residents were told on Friday to seek refuge on higher ground as the Bungil Creek crept beyond the March 2010 flood level of 8.1 metres, when 200 homes flooded.

Personal Hardship Assistance grants, of $180 per person, or up to $900 for a family of five or more, are also available to cover the cost of essentials such as food, clothing and accommodation.

A means-tested Essential Household Contents Grant is available for low-income families to help with replacing uninsured essential household items that have been destroyed in the floods, as well as Structural Assistance Grants for uninsured homes that are damaged.

Meanwhile, supplies for evacuees at two centres in Mitchell have received much-needed supplies after an airlift delivered bedding, food, water, toys, televisions and toiletries.

Maranoa Mayor Robert Loughnan said volunteers were preparing to begin cleaning up in Roma on Sunday morning, as water levels in the Bungil Creek fall.

Residents should leave any water damaged property on the footpath so local council can begin collecting waste on Sunday, Mr Loughnan said.

But it was still too early to begin a clean-up effort in nearby Mitchell, he said.

“Bungil Creek in Roma is 7.32m and falling. Maranoa River at Mitchell is sitting steady at 9.7m.

“Flood waters in Mitchell have not yet receded enough for a clean up effort to begin.”

Mr Loughnan said The Balonne River at Surat was at 9.84m and authorities continued to monitor the levels.

He said power was being reconnected to homes and businesses in Roma and Mitchell as the water receded.

Counselling and financial support services were available to Mitchell residents at evacuation centres, Mr Loughnan said.
