Aussies urge end to US military alliance

On Wednesday, the Australian Anti-Bases Campaign Coalition (AABCC) and other anti-war groups launched a new network to resist the US military buildup in Australia, which they say threatens to bring war to their doorstep and increases hostilities toward Australia, both in the region and globally.

In line with an agreement between Washington and Canberra to establish a permanent joint-training hub in Australia, the first of 2,500 US Marines entered the northern Australian city of Darwin in early April and began engaging in exercises with the Australian Defense Forces.

The US Marines are scheduled to travel to other countries in the region for training and exercises and to eventually form a rotational Marine Air Ground Task Force.

“In terms of security, I can’t see any reason why there would be a need for that base, the base really is about the US extending its military presence throughout the region and also it’s a great contest between China and the US, and Australia is simply caught in the middle,” David Palmer from Flinders University told the Press TV correspondent in an interview.

According to reports published by the AABCC, at least 85 percent of Australians do not want more of their tax money spent on the military. Despite this, Australia’s annual military budget is 36 billion Australian dollars, which is expected to rise 4 to 5 percent each year over the next 20 years.
