Benghazi gunmen target police car

Gunmen have fired a rocket-propelled grenade at a Libyan police car parked outside the Tunisian consulate in the eastern city of Benghazi.

Spokesman for Benghazi Joint Security Room, Ibrahim Sharaa, said on Saturday that the grenade was fired from a vehicle and probably targeted the car of the diplomatic police stationed outside the Tunisian diplomatic mission.

The explosion left a crater in the ground in front of the diplomatic mission and also caused small damages to the outer wall of the consulate building.

No injuries have been reported in the blast.

Tunisia is one of the last states still with a diplomatic mission in Benghazi, as most countries have left the Libyan city due to security reasons.

Egypt withdrew its personnel from its consulate in Benghazi and its embassy in the capital, Tripoli, in January, after five of its diplomats were kidnapped. The abducted diplomats were later released.

In August 2013, the Egyptian consulate in Benghazi was damaged after assailants threw an explosive device at the diplomatic mission.

Benghazi has been the scene of numerous attacks and political assassinations amid an increasing power struggle among several militia groups who fought against former dictator Muammar Gaddafi during the 2011 uprising.

The country’s former rebels have refused to lay down arms, despite efforts by the central government to impose law and order.
