Blood-stained despots at UK Jubilee

The invitation of the tyrant ruler of Bahrain, Hamad Al-Khalifa, to the British Queen’s Diamond Jubilee lunch at Windsor Castle has raised great controversy among human rights activists in Britain.

“Many in Britain will regret that the Foreign Secretary who approves all invitations sent in the Queen’s name as head of state has decided to include a representative of the Bahraini regime which has done such terrible things to its own people”, said former Foreign Office Minister Denis MacShane.

Moreover, human rights campaigner Peter Tatchell said the invitation of despots to the UK Queen’s Diamond Jubilee is “outrageous” and “brings shame” to the British monarchy.

“Inviting blood-stained despots brings shame to our monarchy and tarnishes the Diamond Jubilee celebrations. It is a kick in the teeth to pro-democracy campaigners and political prisoners in these totalitarian royal regimes,” said Tatchell in an interview with the Huffington Post UK.

Tatchell also maintained that members of the Saudi royal family should not be invited to the Diamond Jubilee because they have assisted the Bahraini regime in its brutal crackdown on pro-democracy protesters.

Furthermore, Sarah Waldron of Campaign Against the Arms trade said the Queen’s invitation along with supplying the Al-Khalifa regime with arms sends this message that the British monarchy approves human rights abuses.
