Blue Mountains fire rages for fifth day

A fire in the Blue Mountains, west of Sydney, is burning for the fifth day.

An arsonist is believed responsible for the blaze at Leura, which has already burnt through 19 hectares.

The blaze behind Olympian Parade is in dense bushland below a steep escarpment, making it a challenge for firefighters.

But the NSW Rural Fire Service hopes to control it on Friday, five days after it ignited, spokesman Joel Kursawe said.

Ten fires have broken out in the Blue Mountains region since Monday. All are believed to have been deliberately lit.

Across NSW, 96 fires were burning on Thursday, 18 of which had not been contained.

In the north of the state, a fire at Boonanghi State Forest, west of Kempsey, has charred 1500 hectares of bush since Sunday afternoon.
