Boehner offers to shelve US debt limit

Boehner’s new offer, which is described as a major concession in fiscal cliff talks with President Barack Obama, would generate about USD two trillion in savings over the next decade, according to a Monday report by Washington Post.

The plan also includes a proposal to raise tax rates for the wealthiest Americans to generate as much as USD 460 billion over ten years – about half of what Obama has demanded from the millionaires.

Neither Boehner’s office nor the White House have yet confirmed the new offer.

On Sunday, however, Washington Post quoted Michael Steel, the spokesman for Boehner, as saying that their position had not changed. “Any debt limit increase would require cuts and reforms of a greater amount,” Steel had reportedly said.

Boehner and Obama have not spoken directly since Friday when the Republican House speaker extended his latest offer.

Obama’s latest offer contains 600 billion dollars in spending cuts with USD 1.6 trillion in tax increases over ten years. However, the Republicans’ offer calls for 800 billion dollars in revenue increases and USD 1.4 trillion in spending cuts as they urge Obama to give his consent to more cuts in spending.

If the democrats and republicans do not reach a compromise by January 2013, tax increases and spending cuts kick in automatically, costing US taxpayers an average of more than USD 2,000 a year.

The US national debt is already bumping up against a USD 16.4 trillion cap set last year.
