Boko Haram by the Busloads: Divide And Conquer?

Christof Lehmann (nsnbc) : About a week ago some 486 Nigerians from the predominantly Muslim Jigwa State in 33 buses were stopped in the southern Abia State. Among them, a wanted Boko Haram chief. Whether the other 485 are innocent remains to be seen, certain is, that the incident worsens North-South tensions. Divide and conquer? Who benefits?

As Ochereome Nnanna points out in the Nigerian Vanguard, it is not the first time that Nigerians travel in large numbers to seek work; but the arrest of the 486 in 33 buses by Nigerian Army and Security forces in Abia State was bound to cause suspicions; not least the fact that a Boko Haram kingpin, as Nnanna called him, was among the travelers.

Nnanna points out that Boko Haram leader “Abubakar Shekau” previously bragged that he soon would start targeting the South and continues describing the rising North South tensions, adding that Borno State Governor Kassim Shettina often is a secret supporter of Boko Haram, and that Shettina warned that  the terrorists soon would spread to the South.

Adding to the suspicion that the 33 buses “Astro Turfed” 485 Boko Haram members or recruits was the fact that they had very little luggage with them writes Nnanna, adding that there is a credible basis for their arrest. Nnana argues that some may be innocent but that terrorists can use such large groups to hide among fellow travelers. To protests from northern Governors, he points out that the Abia State government merely raised alarm over a possible threat to citizens and residents of the State and that it is their responsibility to do so.

Problem is, that the Jigwa State House of Assembly threatened to sue the Abia State Government for raising the alarm and arresting the travelers, along with the Boko Haram “kingpin” that was among them. Nnanna opinions that the situation in Nigeria is so volatile that a single bomb explosion tracked back to Boko Haram in the South could devastate “Nigeria as we know it”; that it could be the final trigger to end a long, costly experiment, and that Nigerians must stand against it.

What Nnanna is missing is the fact that foreign involvement is playing a central role in the rise of Boko Haram and the engineering of a conflict. In fact, neither politicians in the North nor in the South or anyone for that matter, breaks the Taboo about foreign hands behind Boko Haram. Questions that need to be answered would for instance be, who exactly organized the 33 buses? Who recruited the 400 plus travelers?

Does any of those involved in arranging the convoy have ties to any foreign agents? Who exactly is it, who would stand to benefit from Nigeria descending into a North – South sectarian war? Are both sides, North – South, Muslims – Christians played against each other? Is there not enough historical precedence to know exactly where to start looking?

Who are the architects for the foreign power, who are the engineers? With the exception of one, these people will probably not be found among the 486 who were bused around on Nigerian roads. One can also ask the question whether the convoy was a provocation in itself, aimed at forcing the hand of Abia State, Military and Security to respond.

Has the smuggling of weapons to insurgents with the help of the Turkish Intelligence Service MIT ever been thoroughly investigated?
