Boston bombings: Czech Republic is not Chechnya

The Czech Republic’s ambassador to the United States has made it very clear that his country is not Chechnya. He was alarmed that many U.S. social media users were leaving messages on Twitter and Facebook to say that the Boston Marathon bombers were from the Czech Republic. Many of the posts called for America to get revenge on the Czech Republic. The ambassador, Petr Gandalovic, put a statement on the Czech embassy website to educate people about the difference between his country and Chechnya. It read: “The Czech Republic and Chechnya are two very different entities – the Czech Republic is a Central European country; Chechnya is a part of the Russian Federation.”

The Czech president reminded Americans that his country is a U.S. ally. He said: “The Czech Republic is an active and reliable partner of the U.S. in the fight against terrorism. We…stand side by side with our allies.” In another Internet mix-up, social media users played online “detectives” and revealed the name of an innocent man they believed was the main suspect in the bombings. One poster said: “I’d like to extend the deepest apologies to the family of [the wrongly accused] for any part we may have had in relaying… faulty information.” Meanwhile, an expert American interrogation team is waiting to question the real suspect, 19-year-old Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, who is in serious but stable condition in hospital.
