A British soldier from the 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards has been killed in a grenade blast in Afghanistan, the Ministry of Defence said.

The soldier, who has not yet been named, was on a patrol to disrupt insurgent activity in the north of Nahr-e Saraj district in Helmand Province when he was caught in the blast from an enemy grenade yesterday.

He died despite receiving immediate medical treatment, a spokesman said.

His family have been informed.

Spokesman for Task Force Helmand, Major Ian Lawrence, said: ‘Sadly I must inform you that a soldier from the 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards has been killed whilst on patrol in the Nahr-e Saraj district of Helmand Province.

‘The thoughts of all within Task Force Helmand are with his family and friends at this difficult time.’

The soldier becomes the 418th member of UK forces to have died since operations in Afghanistan began in October 2001.

The region of Nahr-e Saraj district has seen some of the fiercest fighting with insurgents encountered by British servicemen in recent months.

Less than two weeks ago another heroic young soldier was killed in that same area while rescuing a kidnapped police chief.

Private Gregg Stone, 20, was shot dead as he took part in a daring mission to rescue a policeman kidnapped by extremists in the violent area.

The young soldier, who had been in Afghanistan for less than a month, had been told in the last few days that his wife Samantha was pregnant with his first child.

He was shot dead as his task force successfully saved policeman Abdul Walid from insurgents who captured him at a checkpoint.

the word hero is very overused today and shouldnt be used for someone who was doing a job that they chose to do knowing the risks. the real heros are the red cross who have to go in and clear up the mess left behind but we dont hear to much about them do.

sorry but they know the risks when they sign up for the job.

And how many Afghan civilians died today, hmm?

RIP and thankyou. I salute you all and may those in power hang ther heads in shame.

RIP mucker, see you at the Re-Org in the sky. REspect

Rest in peace James. x

This war is won and over. I know that because our politicians are telling us that. Why then has another soldirer’s life been sacrificed? We are told the Generals are negotiating with enemy as to how our soldiers are to be allowed to leave Afghanistan and what, if any, of their equipment and weaponry our victoriious army is to be allowed to take with them. If this has been a victory I hate to think how embarrassing a defeat would have been. Oh wait, there has been a victory …….by the Taliban

DM what were you thinking putting this story so far down in your headlines!!!! How is a dog that eats laptops more important than the loss of a brave soilders life!!!!!!
Sort your priorities out!

Another blott in Tony Blairs book, come judgement day.

This soldier gave his life in the service of his country – I salute him with these words taken from a hymn – ” And there’s another country, I’ve heard of long ago, Most dear to them that love her, most great to them that know; We may not count her armies, we may not see her King; Her fortress is a faithful heart, her pride is suffering; And soul by soul and silently her shining bounds increase, And her ways are ways of gentleness, and all her paths are peace….” Stand Down young man and “At the going down of the sun and in the morning we will remember them….”
