nsnbc : A new passenger and cargo ferry route has been opened between the Russian port of Vladivostok and the ports of Raijn, Vonsan and Kymgansan. The ferry Man Gyong Bong will sail the route four times per month.
The ferry connection was launched in an attempt to help develop tourism and trade between the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) and Russia’s far east. The first passengers are expected to embark on the journey next week.
Russia’s Consul general in the city of Chongjin, Yury Bochkarev, told reporters the route’s launch is slated to “contribute to the development of regional tourism and bilateral trade.”
Until 2006 the Man Gyong Bong sailed between North Korea and Japan. The route was closed in 2006 when Japan closed its waters for all North Korean maritime traffic in response to North Korean missile tests.
The Man Gyong Bong can carry up to 200 passengers in 40 cabins. Tickets, depending on class, are available for the equivalent of about $ 81 – $ 101. The average monthly income in North Korea is about $ 40 per month. Passengers can also enjoy a restaurant, two bars, karaoke, a store, as well as a sauna.
The Man Gyong Bong can carry up to 1,500 tons of cargo in three holds and it can carry about 10 refrigerated containers. The Russia-based operator states that the main purpose of the ship is to service between Raijn in North Korea and Vladivostok in the Russian Federation.
