China backs political solution to Syria

“China is willing to keep close communication with all parties, so as to settle the crisis impartially, peacefully and properly,” Hong Lei, a spokesman for China’s Foreign Ministry, told a press briefing in Beijing.

Hong also called on the international community to prepare the ground for a political dialogue to set a roadmap for “a political transition” in the country.

On Friday, leader of the foreign-backed Syrian opposition coalition Ahmed Moaz al-Khatib reiterated that the group is willing to sit at the negotiating table with the Syrian government.

The so-called Syrian National Coalition and other foreign-backed opposition groups had insisted in the past that President Bashar al-Assad must step down before any negotiations.

In a key speech on January 6, Assad stated that Damascus was always ready to hold talks with the opposition and political parties and that he would call for a “comprehensive national dialog” after the terrorist activities stopped in the country.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since March 2011. Many people, including large numbers of army and security personnel, have been killed in the violence.

The Syrian government has said that the chaos is being orchestrated from outside the country, and that a very large number of the militants operating in the country are foreign nationals.
