nsnbc : Chinese officials, during a meeting held in the Russian capital Moscow, pledged more support to the Afghan National Defense Forces (ANDF) and the peace process, repots the Afghan National Security Council.
In a statement, the office of the National Security Council (ONSC) of Afghanistan said Beijing’s latest commitment was made during a meeting between the Afghan and the Chinese national security advisers in the Russian capital Moscow.
In its statement the ONSC added further, that Afghanistan’s National Security Adviser Mohammad Atmar met with his Chinese counterpart on the sidelines of other meetings in Russia.
Afghanistan and the People’s Republic of China had in depth discussions regarding the bilateral cooperation between Kabul and Beijing, the statement said. China’s national security adviser pledged more support to equip the Afghan security forces as they confront terrorist groups in the country and for bolstering safety and stability of the region.
China’s Xinjiang province as well as other predominantly Muslim provinces in the People’s Republic have in recent years seen a surge in militant Islamist insurgencies, including Islamist Uyghur militants with links to the self-proclaimed Islamic State.
Atmar also emphasized the need for finding a regional consensus about the peace process in Afghanistan as well as the fight against terrorism. The office of the Afghan national security adviser added that China’s national security adviser said such a census is must for the elimination of the menace of terrorism from the region. Atmar did not release any details about the support China pledged for the national defense forces, or details about Beijing’s plans to promote the peace process in the country.
