Cool down from the summer heat with these Android apps

With triple-digit temperatures hitting many locations across North America this summer, many of us will do whatever it takes to dial in some relief. Your Android-enabled smartphone or tablet can help (assuming it’s not overheated from sitting out in the sun). If you’re looking for some ideas on cooling down or coping with the high heat index throughout the summer, these Android apps can help.

Yelp (Free)

Why is Yelp first on the list? Well, I searched for decent swimming pool-finder, beach-finder and spa-finder apps and pretty much came up empty. Yelp, with its thorough local coverage and established user-base, still remains the ideal way to discover if there are places nearby where you can cool off for a bit. So tap into the app to find a swimming pool or outside body of water near you, or perhaps just a local ice-cream joint.

Camp Finder – Campgrounds ($2.99)

Staying indoors with air conditioning can work for most of us, but what if you feel the urge to get out and about with the family and enjoy the great outdoors? Camp Finder might help you find a wooded, secluded campsite or RV park somewhere nearby where you can relax and unwind. There are 16,000 campgrounds and RV sites listed here with information on rates, amenities, discounts, contacts and handy photos and reviews to make your decision easier.

Backpacker GPS Trails Lite (Free)

Camping might not be for everyone, but if you’re still yearning for an outdoors escape, here is an app that can help. Perhaps you will discover a cool, shaded, wooded trail somewhere close to escape the blistering sun, while still getting in some much-needed exercise. This app lets you capture waypoints, track every step, share your trips on backtracker.com and discover the best trails all across the U.S. For $4.99, you can upgrade to the pro version free of ads and full of additional features.

Cocktail Flow – Drink Recipes (Free)

When it’s hot, you’re often advised not to drink alcohol because it can dehydrate. But let’s be realistic here, nothing beats an ice-cold cocktail on a hot day. This is especially true if you’re hanging out in the yard with friends (everything in moderation, naturally). Cocktail Flow lets you get inventive with the liquor, juices and fresh produce you have at home, with step-by-step guides to building some creative cocktails for any occasion.

GrubHub Food Delivery/Takeout (Free)

You probably don’t want to slave over a hot stove when it’s super hot outside, and perhaps you don’t even feel like walking or driving out to a restaurant only to discover it’s crowded. GrubHub lets you order food from the comfort of home and it will be delivered directly to your door. With 25,000 delivery restaurants offering their services in more than 300 U.S. cities, you’re sure to find something to tickle your tastebuds. The app is searchable by cuisine, restaurant or menu item.
