Crash victims identified as a family

A man and his elderly parents died when a truck flattened their car in southwest Sydney.

A B-double truck veered on the wrong side of the Hume Highway, near Menangle, about 11.25am (AEDT) on Tuesday and crushed a red sedan against a guardrail on the Menangle Bridge.

The three people inside the car were killed.

Their bodies were trapped inside the wreckage for most of Tuesday and disaster victim identification experts were brought in to help forensic officers identify the victims.

Late on Tuesday police said the victim were a 59-year-old man and his parents, aged in their 80s.

The truck driver, a 33-year-old man from Picnic Point, suffered minor injuries and was taken to Campbelltown Hospital for treatment.

He has undergone mandatory blood and urine testing.

It is believed he has been interviewed by police.

Police told News Ltd they were looking into whether the driver had fallen asleep or lost concentration moments before the accident.

The accident also ruptured the B-double’s fuel tank, spewing the fuel into the Nepean River.

Police are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.

The Hume Highway has re-opened to traffic.
