Parts of Queensland are on bushfire alert, with severe fire danger warnings issued for the western parts of the Maranoa and Warrego regions and the southern Channel Country.

The weather bureau is predicting temperatures to reach 37 degrees Celsius in some inland areas today.

A thick smoke haze continues to hang over Brisbane from back-burning near Toowoomba in southern Queensland.

Queensland Fire and Rescue Service Service (QFRS) spokesman Paul Adcock says extreme fire danger conditions could develop in the next couple of days as the hot, dry conditions continue.

Mr Adcock says officers responded to more than 300 fires over the weekend and dozens of fires are still burning across the state.

“The winds and the dryness are a recipe for difficult fire behaviour,” he said.

“There could be some odd parts of the state where the fire weather could approach extreme over the next few days.

“We’re very much warning people to be quite careful out there so they don’t start any additional fires.”

Rockhampton

Two fires at Mount Morgan, west of Rockhampton, burnt out more than 4,000 hectares over the weekend and are expected to flare again today.

Ten fire crews fought fires at Cattle Creek Road and Hamilton Creek at Mount Morgan overnight, after breaking out in the early hours of yesterday morning.

Relief crews will be sent in this morning to work on fire breaks and back-burning.

Rural operations area director Brian Smith says fires are also burning at Stanwell, Gogango, Mount Larcom and Westowe.

“At this stage we’ve been monitoring those fires overnight,” he said.

“We’ll have a [plane] in the air to provide some more intelligence back on those fires.

“I would suggest that we’re going to be out at Mount Morgan today putting in containment lines and back-burning off those lines once the moisture lifts about 10 o’clock this morning.”

Scenic Rim

Meanwhile, in the Scenic Rim area in southern Queensland, a plane is being used to check a bushfire burning .

The fire is covering an area of around 500 hectares at Silverdale near Kalbar.

The blaze is not under control but the QFRS says it is not threatening homes.

One fire crew is at the scene.

Tully

Fire authorities are also monitoring a large grassfire near Tully, south of Cairns in far north Queensland.

The fire is burring at Murray Upper and is not threatening properties at this stage.

Authorities say the fire is expected to keep burning over the next 24 hours and will continue moving towards the community of Bilyana by late today.

Residents are being asked to clean-up around their properties.
