‘Crime rates to rise in Britain’

In an interview with the Huffington Post UK , Sir Hugh Orde, the president of the Association of Chief Police Officers, warned of an increase in Britain’s crime rates with the 20% budget cuts and the 16,000 posts to be lost by 2015.

“For the first time officers suddenly feel vulnerable. They’ve been doing a good, excellent – outstanding – job, but for no other reason than finance they can suddenly find themselves out of work,” said Orde.

The warning comes as British police officers joined a massive nationwide strike staged by British public sector workers against the government’s austerity measures. London’s Metropolitan Police said around 32,000 off-duty police officers marched through London on Thursday 10 May.

When violent unrest hit Britain last August with five people dead and 4,000 others arrested, the British government blamed the police for failing to handle the unprecedented unrest.

However, Scotland Yard has already warned the government that the police budget cuts would bring about “unintended consequences and failure.”

The British police are also under fire for allegations of racial abuse and corruption, especially regarding their links with the media.
