Deadly unrest shut Indian top carmaker

The decision was made on Wednesday after violence erupted at Manesar plant where workers attacked managers and started a fire on the premises, company officials said.

The company said the dispute began when a shop floor employee beat up a supervisor due to “objectionable remarks” made by the supervisor.

The workers’ union then prevented management from taking disciplinary action and blocked managers from leaving the factory after work.

“To resolve the issue amicably, members of the senior management met the union. During the talks, the workers attacked the members of the senior management, executives and managers,” Murati spokesman Puneet Dhawan said.

The Manesar plant, around 50 kilometers (30 miles) from New Delhi, employs 2,000 people, and normally produces up to 1,200 of Maruti’s top-selling Swift and A-Star hatchbacks and SX4 sedans daily.

Dealing with financial problems and protracted labor strikes since 2011, the company officials closed the factory on Thursday in Asia’s third-largest auto market.

Shares in Maruti Suzuki dropped more than six percent on Thursday at the Bombay Stock Exchange as investors worried about the impact on production.
