Victoria’s Department of Human Services plans to cut 500 jobs as part of a major restructure.

The state government announced in December that 3,600 jobs would be cut from the public service over the next two years.

The ABC has obtained a letter from DHS which states it plans to contribute to that plan by axing 500 full-time roles.

The department says all frontline jobs will be retained.

But the Community and Public Sector Union’s Karen Batt says it is not clear which jobs will be lost.

“It says that they’re not extending contracts, they’re not replacing vacancies and effectively they’re going to create 17 mini-departments,” she said.

As part of the department’s restructure, 17 local areas will replace the current eight regions, across the state.

DHS says the job cuts will be achieved through voluntary redundancies and the non-renewal of short-term contracts.
