Ghost Security Group (GSG) is rouge hacker group of counterintelligence officials and computer specialists who have been monitoring Twitter; specifically an account believed to be associated with the Islamic State of Syria and Iraq (ISIS).

These hactivists do not align with the most popular digital collective, Anonymous. While a small number of GSG are former Anonymous members, this group is “small” and has “structure and leadership.

ghost.security.group.vimeo_occupycorporatismDigital Shadow, former Anonymous member now working with GSG, said : “We also have a lot of counterterrorism experience. We have translators, linguists, research analysts on hand to analyze all the data that we receive.”

He has the responsibility of 14 GSG members that are scattered across the globe; as well as serves as the executive director and organizer of operations.

GSG has partnered with CtrlSec , another hactivist group that monitors terrorist on social media.

This group formed after the Charlie Hebdo attack in France and their members have been working 16 hour days as volunteers.

Digital Shadow said: “We realized for the first time, you could be [attacked] in the streets of Paris and attacked in [your] hometown in America. Everybody could become a victim. So we wanted to do what we could to help slow them down.”

According to their website: “Our mission is to eliminate the online presence of Islamic extremist groups such as Islamic State (IS), Al-Qaeda, Al-Nusra, Boko Haram and Al-Shabaab in an effort to stymie their recruitment and limit their ability to organize international terrorist efforts.”

They do this by “involving official channels” to assist people in removing content online published by “known Islamic extremist content including websites, blogs, videos and social media accounts.”

So far the group has successfully taken down 15,423 Twitter accounts associated with terrorism.

They have also removed 146 ISIS propaganda sites, 110,000 social media accounts, and 6,000+ videos.

GSG has been successful in removing content from sites such as:

• Facebook
• Twitter
• Archive.org
• WordPress.com
• YouTube
• Instagram
• Daily Motion
• Blogspot
• Google
• Soundcloud
• Vimeo

GSG knew that the account had high-profile members of ISIS as followers and employed the help of Michael S. Smith II , counterterrorism adviser to select members of Congress and founder of Kronos Advisory.

Through Smith, GSG was able to get their information to authorities. This resulted in an investigation, a plan of attack and the arrest of numerous terror suspects.

Smith explained that “there are people working in the national security community in the US, Europe, the Middle East … who will never be credited with that.”

In their arsenal, GSG says they have developed “automated software that identifies ISIS social medial accounts” as well as having “infiltrated private ISIS communications, and seized control of alleged ISIS social media accounts.

These operations have allowed GSG to obtain internet provider (IP) data that has been used to identify and geo-locate ISIS members.
