nsnbc : Legendary ex-Pink Floyd guitarist and singer David Gilmour will perform a live concert in the ruins of the ancient Roman town of Pompeii this summer, announced Italy’s Culture Ministry. The concert brings to mind Pink Floyd’s legendary music film Live in Pompeii and the song “Echoes”.
Echoes – Gilmour returns to Pompeii
David Gilmour rose to world fame with the psychedelic rock band Pink Floyd. The label “psychedelic” can, however, be somewhat misleading as some of Pink Floyd’s lyrics deal with societal, social and political issues too – they are just very well “packaged” and one may have to listen to them a few times before one transcends the sound barrier and catches on to the message behind the music.
In 1971 Pink Floyd recorded the music film Live in Pompeii in the ruins of the ancient Roman city that was buried under ash some 1,600 years ago when the nearby Vesuvius volcano erupted in 79 A.D.
Gilmour’s return to Pompeii after 45 years will indeed be “an echo from a distant time” for many, but the concert is likely to attract many young listeners too.
So young that those of use who were young in 1971 might appear as “an echo from a distant time” for many of them, indeed. There is something eternal, almost immortal about music when it is at its best, and Pink Floyd has earned that designation alongside others like Mozart.
So when will you have to book your ticket? I don’t know. But Italian Culture Minister Dario Francesci tweeted that the concert would be held on July 7 and 8. British pop singer Elton John will reportedly also come and play. The 70-year-old David Gilmour has surely earned his place in the Pantheon of muses while he still keeps on rocking. It’s a dispensation that isn’t granted to many, so “Rattle the Rock”!!! and “Shine on You Crazy Diamond”!!!
