Egyptian lawmakers convened upon Morsi’s order on Tuesday in the parliament’s first meeting since the assembly was dissolved by the top court on June 14.
The move came in defiance of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, which had warned that the parliament must remain closed, saying all state authorities should respect the constitution.
The president and lawmakers argue that the dissolution of the assembly was itself unconstitutional.
On Tuesday, Egyptians poured into the streets of Cairo in response to a call by the Muslim Brotherhood for a million-man show of support for the president’s decision.
