“We have sent the Italian Foreign Ministry’s request to the concerned security bodies, and up to now we did not obtain any information, but still keep searching,” Abu Zeid added.

Italian Foreign Minister Paolo Gentiloni has asked his Egyptian counterpart Sameh Shoukry to follow up Regeni’s disappearance and provide any possible information on his condition, according to a statement issued by the Italian Foreign Ministry Sunday.

Regeni, 28, is a Cambridge PhD student at Girton College in the department of Political and International Department, Cambridge news reported.

He is a visiting scholar for the American University in Cairo and he was reportedly heading from Giza’s Behoos metro station to Bab-el-Louk in downtown.

“On behalf of the college and the university our thoughts are with Giulio, his family and friends, and currently we are waiting to hear from the Italian authorities,” a Cambridge University spokesperson was quoted as saying by the website.

Social media users on Facebook and twitter created hashtags in English and in Arabic (#whereisGiulio and #جوليو_فين calling for finding the missing student. They have shared photos of him, adding that security forces have confirmed he is not held by police.
