The motive for the shooting remains unclear but Lieutenant-Colonel Alfred
Schuller of the state police said the suspect had a record of domestic
violence and a few days before the incident had been banned from entering
the family’s flat.
But people who knew the man, who owned a kebab and pizza stall, expressed
surprise at his actions.
“He greeted me in a friendly way this morning,” Alfred Reiter, who worked near
the suspect, told the Austrian news service Non, while a neighbour of the
family described the them as “the nicest neighbours you could have”.
The local education authority dispatched a team of psychologists to the school
to provide emergency counselling.
