North Carolina must pay damages to the surviving victims of the N.C. Eugenics Board, which sterilized more than 7,600 individuals between 1929 and 1974 in the name of “improving” the state’s gene pool.

This shameful chapter in our nation’s and state’s history, detailed in a lengthy Associated Press article in today’s paper, will only be closed when the victims have received justice beyond the apologies offered so far.

We are not talking reparations for slavery or some long-ago atrocity (although we would argue that some repercussions of slavery are still felt today). The N.C. Eugenics Board was disbanded a mere 34 years ago. The pain, shame and anger left by its work continues to this day for its victims — people like Elaine Riddick, 57, whose story of forced sterilization after she was raped at age 13 is well documented in the AP’s in-depth coverage.

By the early 20th century, most U.S. states had eugenics programs, and more than 30 enacted laws mandating surgical sterilization for certain individuals. As many as 100,000 people were sterilized in the country before the practice was discredited.

I would support a eugenics policy just as I would support a capital punishment policy if those in charge were nearly always above reproach.

The idea of forcibly sterilizing those ten year olds (fourth graders) who can not pass a second grade basic skills test appeals to me. It should appeal to everyone including the parents of such children. However people being as they are it is best not to consider it.

- Your logic is ludicrous. It does not follow from the rules of genetics that those children whose rights you wish to stomp on would have children that also do not mean your highness’s standards. Especially, if you consider most of time the brain of the young is attacked by electromagnetics, vaccines, drugs, etc, and thus their issues are not related to genetics to begin with. Also, for the record, social Darwinism is full of crap as well, because if you believe you are better apt to survive than the lowly masses, then by natural selection, you should be the dominate breed no matter what you do to the “inferior” races. In fact, psychologically speaking, you are demonstrating your deep down envy for those you consider weak and inferior. The only appropriate response to a moronic ideology that wishes sterlization and and murder is to have as many children as possible. That is what I am doing, and even if your attacks work on some, eventually we will dominate thanks to mathematics.

    And if you would then how many do you know who could be responsible parents if they cannot at the age of ten accomplish the basic skills of an eight year old? I would rather wait until they are older but given the advent of puberty there must be a decision at ten years of age.
    
    Much can be accomplished for the sake of humanity without aborting anyone. Simply sterilize that one out of two hundred who cannot perform basic mental processes. Yes not always do such inabilities transfer to the children but more often than not. We do it with livestock all the time and much has been accomplished by selective breeding. My suggestion is very very limited in scope and I also say we should not adopt such a policy because there are too many people who are drunk with whatever power falls into their hands.
